The impact of corrosion on the safety of reinforced concrete infrastructure

The problem of corrosion of reinforced concrete infrastructures is deeply felt and European and international regulations governing the methods of assessing the state of deterioration and interventions for the safety of infrastructures are increasing.



The corrosion phenomenon of reinforced concrete starts from the reinforcement and progresses to the concrete, undermining the resistance of the structure to the point of compromising its safety.
Corrosion is due to various contributing causes:
- physical causes (temperature changes, freezing / thawing, fire),
- mechanical causes (shocks, explosions, erosion, abrasion),
- structural causes (settlements, overloads, cyclic loads),
- chemical and electrochemical causes (acids, chlorides, carbonates, internal galvanic currents),
- biological causes (fouling, algae, lichen).
Inspection activities with the assessment of the degree of deterioration are carried out periodically, as well as maintenance, which must include the use of innovative materials and reinforcement procedures that guarantee the durability and safety of the infrastructure.
Depending on the level of degradation reached, we can intervene with different treatments: removal of unstable material, sandblasting, hydro-washing, passivation with alkaline solutions and polymer cement, elimination of cracks with epoxy resins and restoration with technical mortars.
Finally, for the surface protection of the concrete, we perform elastomeric coating treatments (waterproofing, anti-carbonation).
