Fireproof coatings for passive fire protection

Fireproof coatings are used to increase the strength of metal structures and protect them from exposure to heat and flames in case of fire.

Metal structures in industrial, commercial and residential buildings, if exposed to high temperatures, can rapidly lose their load-bearing capacity, causing collapse of the building or structure.
The fireproof coatings provide a protective barrier between the metal and the flames, protect the structure from high temperatures and the pressure exerted by the flames.
They slow down the diffusion of heat on the surface, providing more time for the evacuation of any occupants and for the intervention of firefighters.
They can be applied on different parts of industrial structures and hydrocarbon tanks.
To increase the fire resistance of metal structures, fireproof coatings are used:
- intumescent, i.e. special paints suitable for internal and external applications , which swell in the presence of heat and form a foam that insulates the metal providing protection for up to 120 minutes;
- clay, made up of a mixture of expanded clay, water and additives, which when applied to metal surfaces, expands in the event of fire, forming an insulating barrier against heat and flames;
- ceramic, made with a mixture of ceramic powders and binders, which can be applied by spray or brush and offer good resistance to both fire and abrasion, particularly suitable for high heat environments such as the furnaces;
- plaster, made up of a mixture of plaster and additives, which provide good fire resistance, applicable by spray or brush, suitable for internal applications.
The choice of the type of coating for passive fire protection depends on the specific needs of the application and the fire regulations in force.
The application of fireproof and inumescent coatings on metal structures is undoubtedly an effective system for protection in the event of fire.
We are certified in the application of intumescent coatings in CHARTEK, a retardant material for industrial structures, hydrocarbon tanks and components of petrochemical plants.
